STRAIGHTEN UP AND FLY RIGHT BY BRIAN SMITH – A VERY SPECIAL MEMOIR
We are delighted to present to you a very special memoir and autobiography from our very own Brian Smith. Brian is a natural storyteller and raconteur and used his time during the Coronavirus pandemic to share his touching and remarkable story with the world. As ever, Brian has his favourite cause at the heart of all he does, and a percentage of the royalties from the sales of the book will be donated to the RAF Benevolent Fund.
Straighten Up and Fly Right begins with Brian as a small boy growing up in bombed-out East London during World War Two. There he used to sit in his kitchen listening to the stories of pilots who his brother, Johnnie, had pulled out of the water on air-sea rescue launches and so his fascination with aviation and flying began. It follows his remarkable journey to becoming a pilot himself – nothing was going to stop him from achieving that dream against all possible odds. And on through his distinguished career with British Airways as a Training Captain. Never one to put his feet up, Brian then shares us with his incredible adventures as a hot air balloonist, including his role as a flight controller for the record-breaking Breitling round the world balloon flight. It of course culminates with details of his current life as operator of the Spitfire Experience at his home in West Sussex with his wife of 50 years, Cecelia.
Writing this book during the Coronavirus pandemic has been quite a moving experience for Brian. As well as bringing back many memories, it has allowed him to contact and then keep in touch with friends and colleagues from years ago.
This book is published by Brian Smith Publishing in conjunction with Writersworld and is produced entirely in the UK.
